Edmond Chiropractor: Shoes and alignment

Edmond Chiropractor: One tip to maintain alignment

It’s getting warmer, and that means people are getting close to ditching those tennis shoes and putting on some sandals or flip flops. We’ve talked about how flip flops can create pain in you feet, legs, hips, and back. We’re not going to focus on flip flops this time though, because what we call the “flip flop trot” isn’t the only bad shoe etiquette that can cause you ongoing pain. Today, the Edmond chiropractor explains why the shoes you wear matter.

Sometimes it’s not hard to see what shoes will cause you pain. One look at them is all you need to know putting those on will end in a world of hurt. Other types of shoes may surprise you though! Let’s take a look at why you may need to increase your visits to the Edmond chiropractor based on the decision to wear two different types of shoes.

1.) High Heels: High heels are one of those obvious pain shoes we mentioned before. You can tell just by looking at a pair of heels that they are going to lead to all kinds of pain, but not just in your feet. In simple terms, they throw off your alignment by changing your center of gravity. This creates extra stress and strain on your lower back. If you need to wear heels, the lower the better.

2.)Ballet Flats: Like flip flops these flat, slip on shoes don’t offer any kind of support whatsoever. This lack of support can lead to stress and strain on joints. In addition, if the shoes don’t fit properly it can cause your tendons to tighten up as a result of you straining to keep your shoes on when you walk! If the shoes are too tight they will cause pain in your toes which can surge up into your knees, hips, and lower back!

You may not want to hear it, but tennis shoes really are the best bet. Insoles or inserts can also be helpful and lend additional support. We love it when you visit the Edmond Chiropractor and we love treating you for your feet, hip, and back pain we also care about you as a person. Take care of those feet and see in a difference in your pain levels. Enjoy the spring and summer!

Edmond Chiropractor explains why your joints hurt when you have the flu

Edmond Chiropractor explains why the flu hurts your joints

Nobody likes the flu, but possibly the strangest is how your joints and muscle ache when you have the flu. The edmond chiropractor is here to explain why.

Aching muscles and joints are some of the most common symptoms of a flu, but why does that happen? Joints can become stiff and hard to move. This is because of your immune system. Whenever you have a cold, your immune system releases inflammatory chemicals into your bloodstream to combat the flu. Your white blood cells are usually used to repair and maintain your muscle fibres. However, whenever you have the flu your white blood cells are diverted to help fight the infection. Because there’s nothing helping to maintain your muscles, this also helps add to the aching and soreness. Your white blood cells are also the cells that release the inflammatory infection, called Cytokines. It should be noted though, that if you experience redness or swelling it may indicate something more serious. Should you experience any redness or swelling, seek medical attention.

Edmond Chiropractor explains how to minimize joint pain when you have the flu.

Rest is the biggest factor in recovering from the flu and limiting the effects of aching muscles. Remember, your body is using the same cells it uses to repair your muscles to fight off the flu. So whenever you try to “power through” a flu it slows down your recovery because your body has to divert those white cells to repair your muscles. Rest let’s your body focus on fighting the infection as much as possible, shortening your recovery time. Other ways you can reduce aching is taking a warm bath and wrapping yourself in warm clothes and blankets. Another remedy is warm olive or peppermint oil.

You can keep other kinds of join pain at bay by regularly visiting a Chiropractor like Hooper chiropractic, edmond chiropractor. Call us today at 405-285-7325!

Edmond Chiropractor has tips for cold pain

How the cold can worsen joint pain and how you can help prevent it.

It’s starting to get colder outside, for most this means Hot Cocoa, Christmas decorations, and grand feasts with family. But for some this also means joint pain. Edmond Chiropractor is here to help you deal with that pain.

Why does the cold make joints hurt?

The cold won’t cause issues like arthritis but it can make the pain worse. Our bodies restrict how much blood our extremities receive, using that extra blood to keep our vital organs warm in the cold. This can lead to pain in older people and those suffering from diseases like Arthritis and Raynaud’s phenomenon. This also makes joints and soft tissue stiffen, resulting in more pain.

Ways to reduce the pain

Cover your extremities: Gloves, hats, and scarves can all help reduce cold pain by insulating your body from the cold. Wearing lots of layers will also allow you to peel them off as you start to heat up.

Exercise: It’s important to stay active, especially as we get older. Exercising regularly will keep your joints supple and flexible, reducing the pain you feel from conditions like arthritis and helping to maintain your independence into old age. If your going to exercise outdoors, remember to dress warmly and look out for ice.

Mind over Matter?: Studies suggest that Arthritis also has an emotional effect on our bodies. Making people feel upset or distressed. Colder months can lead to increased depression in some people, which can make pain feel worse. Keeping in good spirits can help to reduce physical pain.

Posture: Of Course, maintaining good posture will put less stress on weaker joints and help reduce pain. However, it’s also important to listen to your body. If something hurts when you do an activity, like a shoulder aching when you reach up, that’s your bodies way of telling you something is wrong. Consider changing or modifying that activity so that it doesn’t use that joint.

Making Time To See Our Edmond Chiropractor

Edmond Chiropractor: Offers Time-Saving Tips

It’s summer time and you’d like to think that means your busy schedule just got a little less busy, but the truth is you’re probably still planning just as many “to-do’s”, right? It can be overwhelming to have such a busy life and know that your poor, aching body is need of chiropractic care, but not know just how to fit in seeing our Edmond chiropractor. That’s why, today, we’re going to offer some friendly time-saving tips to help you get more organized this summer.

1.) Sync Family Calendars: The problem? Coordinating family schedules! It is a headache and can often be the reason you just can’t seem to work in a time for yourself to visit our Edmond chiropractor. The solution is simple.

You can either go back to an old-school method by placing one giant calendar on your refrigerator OR get digital with it (most likely as everything else in your life already is) and sync your phone calendars up with the members of your family. If you’re an iPhone user this is easy to do; simply launch the calendar app, enable and set up Family Sharing.

2.) Prepare Healthy Meals In Advance: Scrambling around the kitchen after a long day of activities can often make you want to throw together foods that are simple, but aren’t necessarily the healthiest for your body. Finding healthy recipes that your whole family will like is the first step to eliminating some time constraints. The second step is taking one day (like Sunday, for example) to prepare healthy dinner meals for the whole week.

3.) Create An Evening Routine: Waking up and being an adult in the morning or early afternoon (if you sleep in) is tough enough on most summer days. So, instead of running around trying to accomplish every little task first thing upon waking up, set aside 15-20 minutes prior to bedtime to check some tasks off of your list. This will free up your days and make you feel a lot better.

Shaving off a few minutes here and there by becoming more organized can certainly free up time for you to take better care of your body overall! That means making time to visit our Edmond chiropractor when your spine is in great need. Don’t delay if you have neck or back pain. Let our Edmond chiropractor get your adjusted!

Edmond Chiropractor: Using Robotic Tables For Adjustment

Edmond Chiropractor & The “Mermaid” Machine

Our Edmond chiropractor offers many forms of advanced spinal correction to enhance and complement hands on techniques. Some physiological therapeutic procedures that our Edmond chiropractor will often utilize include various forms of mechanical traction. Some patients aren’t sure what to think when they see the robotic tables for adjustment, but let us clear the air by explaining that although they are some of the newest chiropractic techniques they are actually very safe.

A lot of times, patients feel even more comfortable being able to take advantage of the robotic machines and feel as though their treatments, when combined with hands on therapy are more effective than ever before. One robotic table we use is often thought of as the “mermaid” machine by young children. This is due to the nature of the lower body rotations.

This machine is useful for what our Edmond chiropractor may refer to as flexion-distraction. For lower back pains the machine offers great support. The lower legs being rotated from the pelvic area is a great way to help increase range of motion, especially after an injury. The robotic table isn’t just a useful tool for those with specific injuries, it’s also a good way to offer gentle adjustment opportunities for those with aging bones.

As an Edmond chiropractor who cares about utilizing the most advanced chiropractic techniques, Dr. Clifford Hooper has years of training, expertise and experience in helping patients get pain relief for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and other related conditions originating from the spine. Should you hear that your treatment plan may include the usage of robotic equipment, we hope that you’ll feel a bit more at ease knowing that these machines are safe and are used for a good purpose.

If you have any aches or pains you may be due for a spinal adjustment. Don’t hesitate to give our Edmond chiropractor a call and book your appointment. We can be reached at 405-285-7325.

Edmond Chiropractor Explains Why The Shoes You Wear Matter

Edmond Chiropractor: One tip to maintain alignment

It’s that time of year when people are going to want to ditch the tennis shoes and wear some flip flops. Last summer we talked about how constantly wearing flip flops can cause pain in your feet, legs, hips, and back. This time we don’t want to just focus on flip flops being the problem, because what we call the “flip flop trot” isn’t the only bad shoe etiquette that can cause you ongoing pain. Today, our Edmond chiropractor explains why the shoes you wear matter.

Some types of shoes, when you look at them, you will just know they are going to cause you pain. Others may surprise you! Let’s take a look at why you may be having to increase your visits to our Edmond chiropractor based on your choice in two different types of shoes.

1.) High heels: This is one of those no-brainer shoes we mentioned. You have to know by looking at heels that they are going to cause you pain and not just in your feet. Simply put, they throw off your alignment by changing the center of gravity, causing extra stress and strain on your lower back. If you insist on wearing heels, the lower the heel, the better.

2.) Ballet flats: Just like flip flops, these flat, slip on shoes don’t offer you any support. The lack of support can lead to stress and strain on joints. Additionally, if the shoe isn’t a good fit your tendons can tighten up as a result of you straining just to keep your shoe on when you walk. If the shoe is too tight then you’re left with the possibility of squeezing and causing pain in your toes which can send surges of pain up to your knees, hips, and lower back.

Tennis shoes, as much as you don’t want to hear it, are the best bet. Insoles or inserts can be helpful as well to lend more support. While we love that you want to visit our Edmond chiropractor and we love treating you for your feet, hips, and back pain we care about you as a person more. Take care of those feet and see a difference in your pain levels. Enjoy your summer, everyone!

Edmond Chiropractor- Bed Back Pain

Chiropractic Care For Back Pain Caused By Your Bed

Is Your Bad Bed Causing You Pain?

Millions of Americans are currently suffering from back pain and one of the leading causes of this pain can be traced back to sleeping in odd positions or continuing to sleep on a bad bed. When we say bad, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the mattress itself is bad. In fact, it could just be your box spring being worn out. If you feel like you have back pain most often after sleeping, come see us! Chiropractic care is perfect for this kind of thing. Your spine may need to be adjusted, especially if it has been crunched in a harmful position for several nights in a row.

Honestly, most people spend approximately one third of their life sleeping. With that being said, doesn’t it make sense that sleeping properly, without pain would be important? There are steps to getting rid of that back pain caused by your bad bed! First, you can choose to come in to see a chiropractor for your spinal adjustments. In some cases, one adjustment just isn’t enough. If you’ve been “abusing” your back for a long while then it may take longer to retrain your spine to stay put.

The second step, after chiropractic care, is that you need to address the main source of the problem. If you’ve ruled out other sources of your pain and it seems most logical that something about your mattress isn’t agreeing with you then you need to fix that problem so that your spinal pain doesn’t keep occurring.

Most mattress experts, that are willing to tell you the truth, will tell you to start from the ground up. Make sure the bed frame is secure with a solid center support to avoid the mattress from sagging. Look at the box spring and if it has actual coils inside then you might want to place a piece of plywood on top of it. A better option would be to get rid of it completely and put the whole mattress on a flat platform.

We hope that this helps someone out there!

Types of Chiropractic Traction From An Edmond Chiropractor

Spinal adjustments by an Edmond Chiropractor

This is the time when a lot of people will be moving around, putting up Christmas decorations, shopping like crazy and preparing for the biggest holiday of the year. It’s no surprise that a lot of people experience back pain whether it be from pulled muscles, ligaments or spinal injuries. Depending on your reason for back pain, if you visit our Edmond Chiropractor you may experience different types of treatments. We do offer traction therapy for certain types of low back pain. By applying force to the patient’s spine through weight our Edmond Chiropractor is able to gently stretch the spine and draw apart the vertebrae.

When you hear the terms “Chiropractic Traction” used by either our Edmond Chiropractor or someone else they might sound scary, but really they are just fancy words used to describe the different ways of completing adjustments for healing back pain. Today, we’re going to explain to you the differences between manual traction and mechanical traction.

Manual traction is when the Edmond Chiropractor uses his hands to support and guide the patient through the traction or adjustment process. Mechanical traction can be by our Edmond Chiropractor to treat the cervical or lumbar spine with the use of devices such as adjusting tables and head halters.

Sounds pretty simple, right? It’s not terribly difficult to do and the end goal is to get you to feeling better than when you walked into our office. To complement and enhance the healing effects of the chiropractic care, traction is just one physiological therapeutic procedure we can do for you. If you are experiencing back pain or the symptoms of pinched nerves, consult with our Edmond Chiropractor to determine if chiropractic traction is right for you.

If you’d like to schedule an appointment for your children to get adjusted (or yourself) please give us a call at (405)-285-7325.

Tips From An Edmond Chiropractor: Back Pain & Backpacks

Back Trouble Onset By Heavy Backpacks

This one is, again, for the college students out there. Aside from the stress of enduring school work every day, you could also be one of the many college students putting extra stress on your back. Students complain to our Edmond chiropractor staff a lot about having too many books to carry in their backpacks. Yes, we understand that the campus is large and it may seem as if you never have enough time to go back to your car to swap out books. Of course, making time might need to become an option as heavy books can take a toll on a student’s back.

Research tells us that even a standard backpack load places a lot of compression on the discs within your spine. This can slowly start to increase the curvature of the lower spine. As more college students have come to see us about back related problems we have decided that this issue may need to be brought up. We just wanted to educate other students about this problem. Here are a few tips you can follow to help reduce back pain:

  • Carry lighter loads of books in your pack (stop at the car to swap when needed).
  • Carry your pack correctly. A lot of students let their bags hang low to “look cool,” but this causes more pain. Placing both straps on as intended makes a difference.
  • Complete some easy exercises and stretching once in a while to keep from getting stiff.
  • It seems like such a simple solution, but adjustments with an Edmond chiropractor can do wonders for the body.

Of course, our Edmond chiropractor is willing and able to adjust your spine if you start to feel that your work load and caused your back pain. It’s important that you not let spinal pressure continue to build up without getting it taken care of as it could pose permanent damage later. Our Edmond chiropractor is available to answer any questions you may have about the adjustment process. Give our Edmond chiropractor a call to book your appointment 405-285-7325.
