Edmond Chiropractor Explains How Poor Posture Poses Problems

Edmond Chiropractor: How Posture Makes A Difference

As we head into the month of August there will be an increased number of people changing the way they sit or stand. Due to school starting again teachers will have to stand for long periods of time and students will be sitting behind a desk for hours. As many people find themselves spending more time in a chair or being on their feet for long hours, posture is definitely something worthy of consideration. Today, our Edmond chiropractor is here to share how poor posture poses problems.

A little slouching could do a potentially large amount of damage overtime. Likewise, never taking a break from standing can create some terrible problems. Here’s a few things our Edmond chiropractor would like you to keep in mind:

  • When standing long periods of time the goal is to avoid exaggerating the curves of the neck, upper back, and lower back. Studies show that when you lean forward 60 degrees it places increased stress on your neck which can lead to numbness, pain, and pinched nerves. It’s important to keep your head level over your shoulders, your chin parallel to the floor, and your neck straight. Additionally, your shoulders should not slump.
  • Sitting with legs crossed can cut off the circulation in your body, increasing the pressure and even causing spider veins. Slouching is also a bad habit for people who sit too long. This can create problems with breathing which strains the lungs and makes the heart work harder to provide enough blood for oxygen. It’s important to stand up and stretch those legs every once in a while. When you sit back down try to keep your back straight and maintain proper alignment of the head, neck, and shoulders.

As you may understand, poor posture can strain both muscles and ligaments, making you more vulnerable to injury. Aside from following the little tips our Edmond chiropractor has provided for you, another natural way to correct or maintain posture is through ongoing chiropractic care. Our Edmond chiropractor would be happy to show you how posture makes a difference!

Edmond Chiropractor- TMJ Disorders

Straightening Out TMJ Disorders By Visiting An Edmond Chiropractor

Edmond Chiropractor: Correcting Misalignments In The Jaw And Neck

The temporomandibular joint, also known simply as TMJ, connects your jawbone to your skull like a sliding hinge. There is one joint on each side of your jaw. Sometimes, the TMJ can become misaligned on one side which refers to a TMJ disorder. This type of disorder tends to cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control your jaw movement. It’s common for people who experience TMJ disorders to think they need assistance from a surgeon, an oral surgeon, or a dentist, but truthfully our Edmond chiropractor can often help with this problem!

Sometimes, it can be difficult for patients of our Edmond chiropractor to determine if the pain they’re feeling truly is a problem with TMJ before they decide to come visit us. To help you decide if you might be experiencing some symptoms of TMJ, here’s a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you feel facial pain when opening your mouth?
  • Does your jaw make a popping noise when your mouth is stretched open (like when you yawn)?
  • Do you feel pain while chewing food?
  • Does your joint lock, making it difficult to open or close your mouth?
  • Do you feel an aching pain in or around your ear?
  • Do you feel as though your jaw hinges incorrectly at times?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions then there is a chance you have a TMJ disorder. The pain caused by TMJ disorders often corresponds with the upper neck and jaw being in misalignment, but that is generally a very easy fix for our Edmond chiropractor without the use of drugs or surgery of any kind. With adjustments to correct the alignment, the pressure is relieved from the nerve and jaw pain ceases.

Visit Our Edmond Chiropractors For Lower Back Pain: Part 2

Edmond Chiropractors: Let’s get you aligned

Are you suffering from lower back pain? If so, you’re not the only one! In fact, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has declared that 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. We discussed this a little in part one of this series and we went into a little more detail about what causes lower back pain. In this series we will show you a few more reasons lower back pain commonly exists in most Americans as well as telling you why visiting one of our Edmond chiropractors may benefit you.

As we previously discussed, our Edmond chiropractors usually see patients with lower back pain caused by the pelvis being rotated. We previously listed two common reasons this happens and here are two more:

1.) Sporting injuries
2.) Sleeping in odd positions

Both of these activities can cause your pelvis to get twisted forward, or rotated rather than being aligned. This is an easy fix through chiropractic adjustments. One of our certified Edmond chiropractors can work to get your pelvis bone back to a normal position through a series of adjustments. While going through the adjustment process to correct your rotated pelvis we would recommend trying to sleep without twisting your back, not crossing your legs when you sit and using an ice pack on your back when it hurts. These are just a few simple tips that you can do at home to help “train” your pelvis to stay where it needs to stay. Then, when you’re in the office, one of our Edmond chiropractors will get to work on you and eventually we can correct the problem, letting you say goodbye to pain.

Our Edmond chiropractors are unlike most in that we will actually take the time to get to know you and what works for you best; you’re not just a number to be rushed in and out (unless you want to be rushed due to time constraints), but instead you are a valued patient. We will spend 10 minutes or 30 minutes talking and working with you if that is what it takes. We hope to see you soon so that we can get you adjusted!
