It’s officially “back-to-school” time and that means more time sitting at a desk for many students. In the previous post our Edmond chiropractor talked about how poor posture can have some negative side effects. Today, we’re following that up with ways that you can improve your workspace whether that be at home, in the library, or wherever you find yourself studying or sitting for long periods of time.

Remember, posture is important for a healthy spine and a healthy body overall so here are some tips from our Edmond chiropractor:

1.) Choose The Right Chair: Choosing the right chair to maintain proper posture will allow you to sit without pain. A lot of the chairs are adjustable to accommodate the height difference for many types of people. Of course, sitting up straight with your spine to the back of the chair is important, but also think about how sitting too low or too high can impact your arms and wrist. If your wrists are bent awkwardly for too long it can increase risks of carpal tunnel. Furthermore, elbows should sit comfortably along the sides of your body and your shoulders should be relaxed.

2.) Adjust The Computer Screen: If you’re working at a computer station, most of the time you’ll have the ability to raise or lower the screen to meet your eye level. This is the optimal viewing level to avoid tilting your head and neck too far downward while completing tasks. If you have a laptop computer, try elevating the screen by placing a stack on books under it or consider purchasing a laptop stand.    

3.) Take Short Breaks Often: Allow yourself the space and time to be able to get up and stretch in between cram sessions or projects. As time ticks by it’s possible to forget about your posture and inadvertently start slouching. Getting up occasionally will prevent you from becoming too stiff or from sitting in an incorrect position for too long. Try walking around for just a minute (even if it’s just a bathroom break or a drink break), shaking and stretching your limbs, squeezing your shoulder blades back and forth to loosen up, and taking deep breaths.

As we head into the month of August there will be an increased number of people changing the way they sit or stand. Due to school starting again teachers will have to stand for long periods of time and students will be sitting behind a desk for hours. As many people find themselves spending more time in a chair or being on their feet for long hours, posture is definitely something worthy of consideration. Today, our Edmond chiropractor is here to share how poor posture poses problems.

A little slouching could do a potentially large amount of damage overtime. Likewise, never taking a break from standing can create some terrible problems. Here’s a few things our Edmond chiropractor would like you to keep in mind:

  • When standing long periods of time the goal is to avoid exaggerating the curves of the neck, upper back, and lower back. Studies show that when you lean forward 60 degrees it places increased stress on your neck which can lead to numbness, pain, and pinched nerves. It’s important to keep your head level over your shoulders, your chin parallel to the floor, and your neck straight. Additionally, your shoulders should not slump.
  • Sitting with legs crossed can cut off the circulation in your body, increasing the pressure and even causing spider veins. Slouching is also a bad habit for people who sit too long. This can create problems with breathing which strains the lungs and makes the heart work harder to provide enough blood for oxygen. It’s important to stand up and stretch those legs every once in a while. When you sit back down try to keep your back straight and maintain proper alignment of the head, neck, and shoulders.

As you may understand, poor posture can strain both muscles and ligaments, making you more vulnerable to injury.
