Back Stretching Exercises You Can Do At Home

Back stretching exercises could be the missing ingredient in your daily routine to give you the peak performance that you need! These simple daily stretches that take just minuets to perform, have the potential to improve not only your physical well-being, but are mentally therapeutic too.

Back Stretching Exercises

We all remember PE class…We all had our favorite games to play or not to play. Maybe we have memories of basketball, dodgeball, track and field days, fun times or maybe not so fun times. Maybe PE wasn’t your cup of tea, but there was one thing in common before the start of class. Anyone remember?

Touch your toes, lunges, arm stretches, painful stretches, stretches that felt good, and stretches that you thought no normal human being could perform! The seemingly ridiculous words of your coach would follow, “Stretching is good for you!” But, just how good for you was it? In this article we will look at some of the benefits of daily stretching, specifically back stretching exercises that you can do at home.

If we remember back to what our coach said, stretching, among other things, can decrease your risk of injury. As we stretch, our body will supply nutrients to our muscles, speeding recovery to those areas and joints that may be sore or stiff. It can also increase our range of motion and flexibility, minimizing the risk of potential injury while performing daly activities. Stretching also leads to better blood circulation, improved energy levels, and reduced muscle soreness. Each day, we all give our back a good work out. Just like stretching your legs before and after running or your arms when lifting weights, by doing back stretching exercises, we insure that our back, neck and spine are better prepared to bear the load of all of our work and activities. Here are just a few back stretching exercises that you can do daily:

The Spine Stretch

  • Sit Flat on the floor with your legs straight out and spread wider that your hips.
  • Place your hands flat on the floor between your legs and nod your head forward.
  • Slowly bend at the hips, breathing normal.
  • As you go down, draw your chin into your neck and slide your hands forward on the floor

The Cat Stretch

  • Get on your hands and knees like you are crawling
  • Slowly alternate between arching and rounding your back
  • Easy! Don’t force it.
  • This will work all 3 sections of your back, upper, middle and lower.

Spinal Trunk Rotation

  • Lie on your back and bring your legs up together, bending them at the knees.
  • You should look like you are sitting in a chair, only you’re on your back.
  • Place your palms flat on the floor
  • Take deep breath, slowly exhale as you count down from four, and you bring your knees down slowly on the right side of your body.
  • Repeat on the left side.

These are just a few quick back stretching exercises to add to your daily routine to improve your flexibility, and aid in the overall health of your spine. As always, if you or anyone you know have questions, please feel free to contact your Edmond chiropractor, Dr Ryan Hooper for general information or to schedule an appointment.

Edmond Chiropractor: How Athletes benefit from Chiropractic care Pt. 2

Edmond Chiropractor: More reasons an athlete should seek regular chiropractic care

The Edmond chiropractor is back with a few more reasons why athletes should consider seeing a chiropractor regularly. Previously, we’ve gone over how seeing a chiropractor can reduce pain from regular play, keep you in your top performing shape, and undo much of the wear and tear from regular play. But there are also a few more reasons to consider, especially in regards to injury rehabilitation and treatment.

Non-Invasive/Drug free treatment: Small injuries are common in sports, especially sports like football and rugby were full contact happens often. If your looking for a drug-free, non-invasive way to treat many of these injuries chiropractors may have a solutions. There are many procedures a chiropractor can perform that are non-invasive and require no drugs. Some of these include electrical stimulation to help relieve tension towards the surface of the muscle. Active release techniques combine massage and stretching with movement to help relieve tension and pain in affected joints while also restoring range of motion. Functional dry needling focuses on stimulating deep trigger points to help release tension built up in muscles and keep them relaxed. Finally, they’re is the Graston Technique that can help break down scar tissue through the use of stainless steel tools.

Other injuries: It’s not just skeletal and nerve pain and injuries that a chiropractor can help treat. Shoulder injuries can also be effectively managed by proper chiropractic care, reducing pain in the shoulders. Headaches originating in the neck can also be alleviated by a spinal adjustment from a trained chiropractor. Ankle sprains can also be treated by chiropractors, resulting in the restoration of the range of motion and pain relief.

Tips From An Edmond Chiropractor: Back Pain & Backpacks

Back Trouble Onset By Heavy Backpacks

This one is, again, for the college students out there. Aside from the stress of enduring school work every day, you could also be one of the many college students putting extra stress on your back. Students complain to our Edmond chiropractor staff a lot about having too many books to carry in their backpacks. Yes, we understand that the campus is large and it may seem as if you never have enough time to go back to your car to swap out books. Of course, making time might need to become an option as heavy books can take a toll on a student’s back.

Research tells us that even a standard backpack load places a lot of compression on the discs within your spine. This can slowly start to increase the curvature of the lower spine. As more college students have come to see us about back related problems we have decided that this issue may need to be brought up. We just wanted to educate other students about this problem. Here are a few tips you can follow to help reduce back pain:

  • Carry lighter loads of books in your pack (stop at the car to swap when needed).
  • Carry your pack correctly. A lot of students let their bags hang low to “look cool,” but this causes more pain. Placing both straps on as intended makes a difference.
  • Complete some easy exercises and stretching once in a while to keep from getting stiff.
  • It seems like such a simple solution, but adjustments with an Edmond chiropractor can do wonders for the body.

Of course, our Edmond chiropractor is willing and able to adjust your spine if you start to feel that your work load and caused your back pain. It’s important that you not let spinal pressure continue to build up without getting it taken care of as it could pose permanent damage later. Our Edmond chiropractor is available to answer any questions you may have about the adjustment process. Give our Edmond chiropractor a call to book your appointment 405-285-7325.

Edmond Chiropractors: Let’s get you aligned

Are you suffering from lower back pain? If so, you’re not the only one! In fact, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has declared that 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. We discussed this a little in part one of this series and we went into a little more detail about what causes lower back pain. In this series we will show you a few more reasons lower back pain commonly exists in most Americans as well as telling you why visiting one of our Edmond chiropractors may benefit you.

As we previously discussed, our Edmond chiropractors usually see patients with lower back pain caused by the pelvis being rotated. We previously listed two common reasons this happens and here are two more:

1.) Sporting injuries
2.) Sleeping in odd positions

Both of these activities can cause your pelvis to get twisted forward, or rotated rather than being aligned. This is an easy fix through chiropractic adjustments. One of our certified Edmond chiropractors can work to get your pelvis bone back to a normal position through a series of adjustments. While going through the adjustment process to correct your rotated pelvis we would recommend trying to sleep without twisting your back, not crossing your legs when you sit and using an ice pack on your back when it hurts. These are just a few simple tips that you can do at home to help “train” your pelvis to stay where it needs to stay. Then, when you’re in the office, one of our Edmond chiropractors will get to work on you and eventually we can correct the problem, letting you say goodbye to pain.

Our Edmond chiropractors are unlike most in that we will actually take the time to get to know you and what works for you best; you’re not just a number to be rushed in and out (unless you want to be rushed due to time constraints), but instead you are a valued patient. We will spend 10 minutes or 30 minutes talking and working with you if that is what it takes. We hope to see you soon so that we can get you adjusted!

If you would like to know more or want to schedule your appointment please give us a call @ 405-285-7325.

Visit Our Edmond Chiropractors For Lower Back Pain: Part 1

Edmond Chiropractors: Let’s get you aligned

Did you know that more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, including lower back pain? It also costs them around $600 billion a year in medical treatments, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The problem here is that the “treatments” or pain medications that many Americans take are not really fixing the problem, but rather putting a band-aide over it. Visiting one of our Edmond chiropractors is a wiser choice and we’ll explain more about that in a bit. To get started, in part one of this series our goal is to help you understand a little about what is most likely the cause of your lower back pain.

What our Edmond chiropractors usually see is lower back pain caused by your pelvis being rotated rather than it being straight. There are many reasons why your pelvis could be rotated and a couple of these are:

1.) Trauma
2.) Accidents (car or otherwise)

When your pelvis gets rotated it begins to put pressure on your nerves and joints. As we stated earlier, visiting one of our Edmond chiropractors can fix these types of issues without giving you medication to simply cover up the problem. If the pain kept returning after consuming medications, that should be a red flag that medications aren’t working. Our Edmond chiropractors are best known for safely taking care of acute pain. One of our certified Edmond chiropractors will work to get your joints back to a normal position by eventually working your pelvis out of rotation through a series of adjustments.

Some patients wonder why they are recommended to see a chiropractor in Edmond more than once, but think about it this way; you most likely took several medications in the course of trying to “treat” your pain so you will probably need multiple visits to actually treat it. Your bones are tough so it takes a lot for them to move back to where they need to be. Only through repeated adjustments will they “learn” to stay. We hope that you have found this information helpful and we hope to see you soon.

Stay tuned for part two of this series, but if you’re ready now, let’s get you adjusted! If you would like to know more or want to schedule your appointment please give us a call @ 405-285-7325.
