Edmond Chiropractor Warns That Shifting Sleep Patterns Causes Issues
Sometimes, patients will often tell our Edmond chiropractor that daylight savings time makes them feel groggy. While many people look forward to springtime, it’s not always pleasant to turn the clock forward one hour. Of course, unpleasantness may not be the only factor to deal with as documented studies would suggest that shifting sleep patterns can have negative impacts on your health.
According to historical data, daylight savings time was introduced in the United States in 1918, repealed by most states, and then brought back again by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. Today, it is still used to allow people the opportunity to enjoy more time outside, in the light, during spring and summer months.
There’s no doubt that “springing forward” hurts more than “falling back” an hour, but that loss of one hour could make you feel more than just a little grumpy. Our Edmond chiropractor looked at a few studies regarding the matter.
Researchers from the University of Alabama-Birmingham conducted a study in 2012 about daylight savings time. They found that the Monday and Tuesday following daylight savings time in the spring have been associated with a 10% increase in heart attacks.
In 2016, another study was conducted in Finland. The results showed that the stroke rate increased by 8% within two days after daylight savings time began.
The research compared stroke rates between more than 3,000 people who were hospitalized the week after daylight savings time began and stroke rates from more than 11,000 people who were hospitalized two weeks prior to or after the week of transition. Not only did the research indicate a higher number of strokes occurred after daylight savings time, but it also found that cancer patients were 25% more likely to have a stroke just after the time change.
The overall belief, by experts, is that these medical issues most likely happened as a result of people severely messing up their sleep patterns. To avoid complications it is suggested that you ease yourself into the new sleeping routine by gradually shifting over the next few weeks. Doing so is supposed to help reset your internal clock so that you won’t be at an increased risk for medical problems.
Additionally, it has been reported by many patients that regular chiropractic care has helped them fall and stay asleep. Our Edmond chiropractor can align your spine properly. In turn, this can allow your body to heal, prevent injuries, and promote relaxation in the body.
